Difference between Earthing and Grounding

In this article we will know about the difference between earthing and grounding . we will also discussed about the neutral earthing and earthing equipment.
Difference between Earthing and Grounding.
Earthing | Grounding |
|
It provides protection of entire power system from malfunctioning. |
2. It contains zero potential | It is not posses of any zero potential |
3. Earth wire used of green color. It means earth wire indication is green color. | Ground wire color is black. Black wire is used as ground wire.it is main difference between earthing and grounding. |
4. It is used to avoid electrical shocking human. | It is used for unbalancing when the electrical system is overload. |
5. It is located under the earth pit between equipment body and underground. it is also difference between grounding and earthing. | It is located between the neutral of the component body and ground. |
6. The purpose of earthing is to minimize risk of receiving an electric shock if touching metal parts when a fault is present | Grounding is done for the protections of power system equipment and to provide an effective return path from the machine to the power source. For example grounding of neutral point of a star connected transformer |
7. In USA term Grounding is used | In UK term Earthing is used. |

Earthing of Power system
Earthing can be divided into neutral earthing and equipment earthing Neutral earthing deals with the earthing of the system neutral to ensure system security and protection. Equipment earthing deals with earthing of non-current carrying parts of the equipment to ensure safety of personnel and protection against lighting. these are main difference between earthing and grounding.
Neutral Earthing System

A number of methods exist for earthing the neutral points of generators and transformers. At one extreme is the underground or isolated neutral and the other extreme is the solidly earthed neutral.
In between there are various degrees of earthing through resistance, reactance or arc suppression coil.
Isolated neutral
As the name suggests an isolated neutral system operates with the neutral not connected to ground. In the event of line to ground fault on any phase, the healthy phases assume line to line potential.
Solid Earthing
Solid earthing (also known as effective earthing) means a direct connection of the neutral earth.
Resistance earthing

When when it is necessary to limit the earth fault current the neutral is earthed through a metallic or liquid resistor. Resistance earthing also improves the system stability under fault conditions.
